ERIC Digests: Student Motivation to Learn

Infants and young children, intensely curious about the world around them, are strongly motivated to learn all that they can. Sadly, this desire to learn seems to decline sharply for some students as they age. This digest, authored by Linda S. Lumsden and part of ERIC's Clearing house on Educational Management, considers what educators can do to keep alive this desire for learning. Lumsden examines the role of classroom climate, the type of learning tasks most likely to stimulate student curiosity, and how to deal with both intrinsically- and extrinsically-oriented students.

Huitt of Valdosta State University's department of psychology and counseling, the essay explores the relationship of motivation and emotion, as well as some of the reasons why certain students may lack motivation. Particularly useful for educators is Hit'slist of intrinsic and extrinsic tools.

Writer Robert A. Harris has had plenty of experience in the classroom -- he has taught English at the college level for more than a quarter century. He draws extensively on that experience in offering his views aout different ways in which teachers can motivate students to learn. Harris stresses the importance of carefully explaining assignments so students know hot only what to do but why they're doing it. He also touches on keeping students motivated through the role of incentivews, student participation, individual tutoring, the satisfaction of student needs, and making learning visual.
